The Wagner Farm Arboretum is a non-profit organization that was started in 2004 with the goal of enriching, educating, and inspiring the community through enhancing environmental awareness and recreational activities. The Giving Project, for example, involves planting, growing, and harvesting vegetables in the Giving Garden, Coddington Farm Garden, and Rutgers Cooperative Extension Farms in Pittstown, NJ, and then donating it to local food banks; the WFA Community Garden; and the Children’s Garden, to mention a few.
A former working farm, Wagner Farm Arboretum, is located in the heart of Somerset County on 96.6 magnificent acres of gorgeous terrain. Plants at the Arboretum and volunteers and members work together to enhance, educate, and inspire the local community by raising environmental awareness and providing recreational possibilities.
The Children’s Garden is available from dawn to sunset every day of the year, allowing you to see the changing effects of the seasons on the plants, which are mainly native to New Jersey. Almost all of the work on this site is done by volunteers. A high fence surrounds the garden, keeping animals out, but it is always available to the public open the sliding bar on the gate and shut it when you are finished. In a fenced-in, secure area, there is plenty of space for children to run about and play with their collection of outdoor musical instruments. They may also explore a small sensory garden and learn about different plants. Many seats are dispersed around the park for sitting, and an enormous covered pavilion is there to give shade during the warmer months. Please bring a blanket and a picnic lunch, and sit back and enjoy the sounds of nature while the birds and bees go about their business of beautifying the garden plants and attracting other insects.
It is not authorized to bring dogs into this location.
The only time the children’s garden will be closed is when a private event occurs or when an arboretum event occurs. Call the headquarters ahead of time to ensure that the garden will be available to the public when you arrive. The office is available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, while the park is open seven days a week.
Visit the annual BRITE NITES Halloween celebration, which takes place at night and is entirely staffed by volunteers who do all of the work. Come at any time of day or night to discover some peace while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
